Las Vegas — My left foot has a rather nasty infection that I've not been able to get under control. I plan on going in so that they can take a more aggressive treatment. Most likely I'll be spending a day or two with a IV antibiotics plugged into my arm.

Cyberspace — The news is full of stories about monumental surprise hospital bills, sky-high drug prices and patients going bankrupt. The government's approach to addressing this, via an executive order that President Trump signed June 24, 2019, is to make hospitals disclose prices, including negotiated rates with insurers, so that patients supposedly can comparison shop. But this is fool's gold — information that doesn't address the real question about why these prices are so high in the first place. (More)

Hollywood — San Francisco in the 1990s was a defining time for Australian-born actor Murray Bartlett. He was visiting the Bay Area at the time and came across VHS tapes of Tales of the City, the PBS miniseries that first aired in 1994. Bartlett “completely fell in love” with the characters, and quickly devoured the nine Armistead Maupin books the series is based on. Bartlett’s impressions of the city were forever “mingled” with the imagery of the novels and adaptions. And he isn’t alone. (More)
